30 years after, Buhari back in seat of power

President Muhammadu Buhari would go down in history as the second military Head of State who came back to power as civilian president. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was the first to set the record. Buhari, in his second coming said he is now
a democrat with high democratic principles. ROTIMI FADEYI examines issues raised in his inaugural speech.
For someone like President Muhammadu Buhari, who retired from the Nigerian Amy as a Major General, fighting battles cannot be strange; in fact, it would have become a way of life. However, in the field of battle, a lot of things happen.
Some may get wounded, while deaths may even be recorded. However, winning the battle is always the primary focus while the thought of losing is never an option. Buhari, who was military Head of State of Nigeria from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985, had made attempts since 2003 to come back to power as a civilian President, but failed to realise his ambition.
He contested against former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003 but lost in the election while another attempt failed when he contested against late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2007. Not willing to give up his ambition, he contested election against former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and again lost. At this point, he decided not to contest election again.
